We have learned information about global warming, whether in school, from TV programs,or by overhearing the adults around us.The pieces of information and facts are everywhere, but where on earth does global warming come from? How does it relate to our lives? And what can we do to help?

Let's check out The Downto-Earth Guide to Global Warming, written by Americans Laurie David and Cambria Gordon. In the book, the concept of sustainability(可持续性的概念)is compared to the love of your pet.“Even though your cat might pee(撒尿) on your bedspread or your dog might chew your favourite shoes, you still keep it.You don't throw it away.” The planet is also compared to your messy room, and CO2 and temperature “go together like peanut butter and jelly(果酱)”.

While a mere one degree increase in world temperature might seem small,a comparison of a popsicle(冰棒)you can lick(舔)and one you'd have to drink may make your concern for global warming grow.

The book, constructed from 100 percent recycled paper and printed with soy(黄豆)inks, has a chapter “What you can do to stop global warming”.There are tips you might have already known, but the book has more interesting ideas. For example, leading an unplugged(不通电的)life for a day,or considering your career ambitions in light of climate change. From hydrologist(水文工作者)to biofuel(生物燃料)engineer, they are careers that are sustainable and can be realized.

“Kids are the number one influence on their parents. They are guides of change,” said author David.

Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that_over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household's waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for burying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But is also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realise just how much unnecessary material are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

  6. What does the underlined phrase“that over-consumption” refer to?

  A. Using too much packaging.

  B. Recycling too many wastes.

  C. Making more products than necessary.

  D. Having more material than is needed.

  7. The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show ________.

  A. the tendency of cutting household waste

  B. the increase of packaging recycling

  C. the rapid growth of supermarkets

  D. the fact of packaging overuse

  8. According to the text, recycling ________.

  A. helps control the greenhouse effect

  B. means burning packaging for energy

  C. is the solution to gas shortage

  D. leads to a waste of land

  9. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

  A. Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

  B. Supermarkets care more about packaging.

  C. It is improper to judge quality by packaging.

  D. Other products are better packaged than food.

  10. What can we learn from the last paragraph?

  A. Fighting wastefulness is difficult.

  B. Needless material is mostly recycled.

  C. People like collecting recyclable waste.

  D. The author is proud of their consumer culture.

  3. 解析:选A。

  5. 解析:选A。 由文章第四段“For example, leading an unplugged life for a day,or considering your career ambitions in light of climate change”可以推出作者举了书中的两个例子作为如何阻止全球变暖的建议。

根据第一段中的“We are dealing with the results of that overconsumptionin the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not need to bring so much material home in the first place”可知,如果我们没有把这些东西带回家的话,那岂不是更好,言外之意指的是带有包装的产品太多了,划线部分意义即为“过度消费”,所以D项意义正确。

  8. 解析:选A。 根据第三段中“If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy”可知,包装燃烧后释放出来的温室气体,会导致温室效应,回收会对控制温室效应有帮助。

  10. 解析:选A。
