Part A
A
I am a strong believer that if a child is raised with approval,he learns to love himself and will be successful in his own way.Several weeks ago,I was doing homework with my son in the third grade and he kept standing up from his chair to go over the math lines.I kept asking him to sit down, telling him that he would concentrate better. He sat but seconds later,as if he didn’t even notice he was doing it,he got up again.I was getting frustrated, but then it hit me.I started noticing his answers were much quicker and more accurate when he stood up.Could he be more absorbed while standing up?
This made me start questioning myself and what I had been raised to believe.I was raised to believe that a quiet, calm child was a sure way to success. This child would have the willpower to study hard, get good grades and become someone important in life.
Now those same people perhaps come to realize that their kids are born with their own sets of DNA and personality qualities, and all you can do is loving and accepting them.As parents, throughout their growing years and beyond that,we need to be our kids’ best cheerleaders, guiding them and helping them find their ways.
I have stopped asking my son to sit down and concentrate.Obviously,he is concentrating just in his own way and not mine.We need to learn to accept our kids’ ways of doing things. Some way may have worked for me but it doesn’t mean we need to carry it through generations. There is nothing sweeter than being personal and unique. It makes us free and happy and that’s just the way I want my kids to live their own life.

My first day of high school was like any other’s:registering, finding new classmates, meeting new teachers, and seeking new friends.
During lunch,I ran into my first snag(困难) of the day.At the dining hall,as the checkout(付款处) lady asked for my money,I realized that I had forgotten my lunch money. When I told her about it,I heard a voice behind me.I turned around and there stood a teacher telling her he would pay for my lunch. He told me his name,Mr Pete Walker, and said,“If you get a chance, you should take my history class.” I recognized his name, and told him I was in his class later that day.Mr Walker befriended me on the very first day of school at a very crucial time of the day—lunch!
He always told us we should do more than we ever thought. He pushed us to do all things better. He coached many sports, and sponsored many after-class activities. If we were interested in something,he would find a way to expose us to it by inviting speakers, taking us on field trips,or obtaining information for us.
Two years later,my junior year in school was clicking along nicely when one day I was riding my motorcycle and I was hit by a car.I spent six days in hospital and was at home in bed for two weeks before returning to school.Mr Walker stopped by the hospital each day with my work from my teachers.Once I was at home,he would bring my work too.
After high school,I attended the United States Army Airborne School in Fort Benning,Georgia.I knew my parents would be there the day I graduates, but they brought an unexpected guest. They came across Mr Walker at lunch several days before and told him I was about to graduate. His visit, however, was not a surprise to me.

luckily“幸运地,幸运的是”;secretly“秘密地”;carelessly“粗心地”;hopefully“有希望地,有前途地”。
accept“接受”;appear“出现”;answer“接(电话),应(门),回答”;receive“收到”。
3.A 根据前面的“It was a rainy morning, which for cab drivers in this big city”并结合常识可知,在大城市下雨的早晨,出租车司机是很忙的。
4.A 根据下一句“I told him the street where I lived”可知,出租车司机是要询问能够把手机交给“我”的地点,故选A项。
5.B 根据后面的“jumped out of bed”可判断,“我”动作很快,故选B项。
6.A 上文 “ 5 jumped out of bed and got dressed”的目的即是下文中提到的“I could meet him at the street corner”,故选A项。so that“以便,为了(表目的)”;even if“即使(表让步)”;unless“除非(表条件)”;as“随着(表时间),由于(表原因)”。
9.C 根据后面的原因状语“for having such a kind and beautiful heart”可知选C项。
11.B 根据前面的“who had recently moved to this country”并结合常识可知,对于一个刚刚来到陌生城市的人来说,手机是多么重要。
13.A 根据前面的“He said my thanks were all that he could”及司机空跑那么远的路专程来送手机的热心行为可判断,司机认为“我”的感谢已经足够令他高兴。
14.B 根据上文可知,朋友的手机被出租车司机交托到了“我”的手里,再结合后面的“tell him how I had received it”就更加明确答案为B项。
17.D 上文“I 9 him for having such a kind and beautiful heart”有提示,这里指出租车司机热心助人的优秀品质。
18.C 根据下面的“make people around in the city”可判断,这里泛指其他的人,而不是特指亲戚、朋友或者邻居。
