Text 1
W: Would you mind making less noise? The others are reading books.
M: I'm really sorry! I'll be careful next time.
Text 2
M: Do you think we can catch the train if we keep driving at this speed?
W: Yes, but I'm afraid the road may become crowded soon.
Text 3
M: I have good news. Someone just told me about a onebedroom place for you, with very reasonable rent.
W: Thank goodness. I was just about to give up.
Text 4
M: It is said it's going to be quite dull and cloudy tomorrow morning, but it might brighten up soon.
W: Well, so long as it doesn't rain, I'm going on a picnic tomorrow with Judith and Peter.
Text 5
W: Darling, is Ben coming to our party tonight?
M: Yes. I told him yesterday and he promised.
W: Did you also tell Cathy and Harry?
M: Yes. But they have something urgent to do.
Text 6
W: Hello.
M: Hello, Carol. It's Mike. We were given a letter last week about the geography field trip. I just want to remind you that it needs to be signed by your parents, and it should be handed in by tomorrow.
W: Are we leaving on Sunday or Monday for the trip?
M: All the information is given in the letter. Final details will be posted on the notice board on Friday morning, the day after tomorrow.
W: OK. Thank you, Mike.
M: You're welcome.
Text 7
M: I'd like to rent a bike for a day. How much does it cost?
W: It's 20 dollars a day. A day is from 9:00 in the morning until 7:00 in the evening.
M: So, if I brought the bike back at 7:30, would I have to pay for an extra day?
W: Yes, and there's a deposit to pay as well. It's 50 dollars. Then when you bring the bike back, we'll give you back the 50 dollars. But if you didn't bring the bike back before 7: 00 pm, we'd keep the money, of course.
M: Well, you don't need to worry. I'll surely bring the bike back at 5:00. Do you have helmets, by the way?
W: Of course. It's free to rent a helmet. Let's go and choose a bike and a helmet for you.
Text 8
W: Good evening, sir. I'm the assistant manager.
M: Good evening.
W: I'm afraid we've had a complaint from your neighbour about the noise. He's trying to get some sleep as he will have an early start tomorrow. I'm sure you understand.
M: Oh, I see.
W: Do you think it might be possible to ask your friends to be a little quieter? We do like to give our guests a chance of getting a good night's sleep. It is well after 11:00.
M: Oh, I'm sorry. I do apologise. I suppose we were talking rather loudly. It's just that we've reached an important agreement. We were having a bit of a celebration.
W: I'm pleased to hear it. Shall I ask Room Service to bring you some coffee?
M: No, that won't be necessary. We were just about to have a rest anyway.
W: Thank you, sir, and good night to you.
Text 9
W: Welcome to the selfstudy language lab.
M: What can we do in the language lab?
W: Some students like to listen to recordings, but I think it's better to use the lab for speaking practice.
M: Yes, I need to practise my pronunciation.
W: Then try this recording.
It has all the English sounds that are difficult for Spanish speakers.
M: Can I take a copy of the recording home?
W: No, I'm sorry! We like all the material to stay in the language lab. The machines here are special. They play the teacher's voice and record the student's voice in another file at the same time. You can't do that with most MP5 players.
M: What other types of speaking practice can we do?
W: Well, the grammar practice is very useful at your level.
M: Do we have books? How many exercises should I do?
W: Yes.
The books are over there.
It's best to repeat just one or two exercises every day. Record and play back your answers several times. Try to do better each time.
Text 10
W: So why exactly does your job have a reputation for being stressful?
M: Well, stress is generally driven by the feeling of being out of control of a situation, and a feeling of a situation controlling you.
Trading in financial markets combines both.
W: How do you relax in the evening?
M: I rarely do anything workrelated, so it's easy to escape the markets. I generally go to the gym or go for a run, especially if I've had a bad day. I always cook a meal, rather than have a takeaway.
I also like to do something my brain would regard as creative.
W: Do you think what you do to relax is an effective way to beat stress?
M: I don't think there's a specific rule of how to beat stress. I generally find that what I do is effective for me.
W: Would you consider changing your job because of the high stress?
M: I have considered leaving my job due to stress. However, I do think that the existence of stress is a good thing, and if used in the right way, it can actually be a positive thing.
W: What do you enjoy about the stressful aspects of your job?
M: I do actually enjoy the mental challenge it brings me. Trading helps cause a wide range of emotional changes second by second. How you deal with and manage those emotions requires short, medium, and long term trading performance and success.

Linda Evans was my best friend—like the sister I never had. We did everything together: piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding.
When I was 13, my family moved—away. Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special timeslike my wedding and Linda's. Soon we were busy with children and moving to new homes, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped“Address Unknown”. I had no idea about how to find Linda.
Over the years, I missed Linda very much. I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
One day, I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagman—Linda's married name.“There must be thousands of Wagmans.”I thought, but I still wrote to her.
She called as soon as she got my letter.“Mrs. Tobin!”she said excitedly,“Linda Evans Wagman is my mother.”
Minutes later I heard a voice that I recognized at once, even after 40 years. We laughed and cried and caught up on each other's lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there's one thing that Linda and I know for sure: We won't lose each other again!

Audrey Hepburn (奥黛丽·赫本) won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her first major American movie, Roman Holiday, which was released in 1953. But she is remembered as much for her aid work as for her acting.
Born in Belgium in 1929, Audrey's father was British and her mother was Dutch. Audrey was sent to live at a British school for part of her childhood. During World War II, she lived and studied in the Netherlands. Her mother thought it would be safe from Gerrnan attacks. Audrey studied dance as a teenager and during college when she returned to London after the war. But she realized she wasn't going to be a ballerina(芭蕾舞女演员). So she began taking acting parts in stage shows. Later she began to get small parts in movies.
But it was Audrey Hepburn's move to America that brought her true fame. In 1951 she played the character“Gigi”in the Broadway play of the same name to great critica1 praise. Two years later, Roman Holiday made her a star at the age of 24.
Audrey made more than 25 movies. Among her most popular roles was Holly Golightly in Breakftist at Tiff any's in 1961. Three years later she played Eliza Doolittle in My Fair Lady.
