  (2024高考训练)阅读理解

I sat with a friend a few weeks ago as she scrolled through photos of her college freshman daughter on her phone. She asked me, “Doesn't she look happy? She looks OK, right?” Her daughter had recently had a difficult time, which was now over, but her mother — like all mothers would — still worried, sometimes, that something might be wrong.

For generations of parents, sending children off to college meant knowing little to nothing about how their children were doing. Other than the occasional letter or call from a dorm room phone, children who had left home were mostly unseen and heard from infrequently. College kids could get into all kinds of trouble and their parents would know nothing about it until Christmas vacation or summer break.

Now, of course, that's not at all how it is. Parents of college students can spend hour upon hour examining photos on Instagram or Facebook of their children. They look for hints of sadness in their eyes, the way their clothes fit, whether they're really smiling or just sort of smiling.

However, I don't think it's necessary. College is a time of intense personal growth. Pain is a necessary lesson for the emotional leap from childhood to adulthood. Mothers shouldn't be able to see photos in real time that capture their children when they're at their worst — whether because of too much alcohol or too little happiness.

The blessing of social media is the ability to connect at any time with your child, no matter where he or she may be in the world. Facebook, Instagram and the rest are keeping our helicopters flying long after they should have landed. Maybe it would be better for all of us to be a little less aware of the state of our children's lives once they leave home. Better for the children, and certainly better for the parents.

China’s new buzzword, tuhao, may be in next year’s Oxford English Dictionary.

“If its influence continues, it is very likely to appear on our updated list of words, ”said Julie Kleeman, project manager with the editing team.

In Chinese, tu means uncouth and hao means rich. It has traditionally been referred to rich people who throw their weight around in China’s rural areas. In recent years, people borrowed the term to describe those who spend money in an irrational(没道理的)manner. The word gained credence in September with the launch of Apple’s new gold-colored iPhone, an item loved by China’s rich people. The color became known as“tuhao gold. ”The word is now often used by the online community to refer to people who have the cash but lack the class to go with it.

Kleeman also mentioned two other Chinese words—dama and hukou—which may also be taken in the dictionary. Hukou means household registration in Chinese and has been widely used.

Dama, meaning middle-aged women, was first used in the Western media by the Wall Street Journal in May when thousands of Chinese women were buying up record number of gold. They were the driving force in the global gold market between April and June when the gold prices had slumped(下跌).

“We have nearly 120 Chinese-linked words now in Oxford English Dictionary, ”she said. Some of them are: Guanxi, literally meaning“connection”, is the system of social networks and influential relationships which facilitate business and other dealings. Taikonaut is a mix of taikong, meaning outer space, and astronaut.

The new words will be first uploaded on the official website before the dictionaries arrive. The online version is also renewed every three months. “It at least broke our old rules. It used to take 10 years to include a new word but now we keep the pace with the era, ”according to John Simpson.

  【文章大意】在近期一档关于中国热词的栏目播出后, “tuhao”一词引起了《牛津英语词典》编著者的关注。这个中国时髦热词“tuhao(土豪)”明年有望被收入《牛津英语词典》。

  C. The people who spend money reasonably.

【解析】选D。细节理解题。根据第三段的The word isnow often used by the online community to refer to peoplewho have the cash but lack the class to go with it. 可知, tuhao指的是那些有钱但是没有阶层归属的人们。

in Endangered Species in Thailand.According to the rules, the whitetip (白鳍鲨),the porbeagle (鼠鲨),and three varieties of hammerhead will be protected.Besides, manta rays (比目鱼),valued for their gills (鳃)which are used in Chinese medicine, will also be protected.

The action is seen as the most important one in the 40year history to protect these species.

“Regulating international trade in these shark and manta ray species has a great effect on their survival and is a very clear way of helping to protect sharks and our oceans,” said Secretary General John Scanlon.“The practical steps will involve issues such as limiting export levels, and identifying the fins, gills and meat that are in trade. This may seem challenging, but by working together we can do it and we will do it.”

Under the rules, all trade in these sharks and rays across 180 countries will not be allowed unless they have got their permits given by the national related organization.

As a matter of fact, trade in shark fins has already decreased greatly as a result of campaigns to raise awareness.Recently it has been reported that sales have gone down by 70%.Earlier this year the hotel giant,Hilton Worldwide stopped serving shark fins at its 96 owned and managed AsiaPacific hotels.

However,Denmark,Canada,Guyana,Japan,Iceland and Yemen have all announced they will not follow the new rules and will continue to fish for some or all of these species.Under the regulations though, they are only able to trade with other countries that are also ready to ignore the rules.

Officials point out that for such a questioned issue, the number of countries which is going to continue the trade is small.

【2024高考复习】阅读理解 “One City One Book” is a generic name (通称) for a community reading program that attempts to get everyone in a city to read and discuss the same book.Popular book picks have been Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird,Ernest Gaines’s A Lesson Before Dying, and Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451.

“One City One Book” programs take the idea of a localized book discussion club and expand it to cover a whole city. The first such program was “If All of Seattle Read the Same Book” in 1998,started by Nancy Pearl at Seattle Public Library’s Washington Center for the Book. The book chosen for the program was The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks, written in 1991.Other cities copied the idea, and the Library of Congress listed 404 programs occurring in 2007.

Each city’s program has its own goals;these typically include building a sense of community and promoting literacy.Nancy Pearl warns against expecting too much from a program:“Keep in mind that this is a library program,it’s not an exercise in civics, and that it’s not intended to have literature cure the racial divide. This is about a work of literature.”

Programs typically involve more than having everyone read the same book. Some other activities that have been included are:book discussion sessions, scholarly lectures on the book or related topics,a visit by the author, exhibits, related arts programming (especially showing a movie of the book if there is one),and integration into school curricula. In Boston the “One City One Story” program used shorter stories and distributed tens of thousands of free copies of the story over the course of a month.

American Library Association puts out a detailed stepbystep guide on how to organize a local program, including the critical step of picking the one book. The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress tracks all known programs and the books they have used.
