阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。“Another bad day at school?” my father asked as I came into the room.

“How could you tell? I didn’t shut the door heavily or anything,” I replied. Over the past two months I had either done this or thrown my backpack across the room every time I came home from school. Papa thinks it has something to do with moving to a new house.

“I know this move has been hard on you. Leaving your friends and cousins behind is tough,” Papa said, as he put his arm around my shoulder. “What you must remember is that, with a lot of hard work and some time, you will make new friends.”

“You don’t know how hard it is. This year my baseball team would have won the championship. They won’t even give me a chance to pitch (投球) here. All I get to play is right field, and that’s the worst!”

Papa turned toward me. “Things will get better, I promise you. Let me ask you, do you know why you were named David Lorenzo?”

“Yes, your name is David and grandfather’s name is Lorenzo.”

“Very good, and what makes your grandfather so important?”

“He was the first in the family to come to this country and all that,” I answered.

“That is only partly correct. Your grandfather was a very great man. In Mexico, he had been a teacher. When he came to America he could only get low-paid labor jobs because he didn’t speak the language. It took him two years before he spoke English well enough to be allowed to teach here, but he did it. He never complained because he knew change could be difficult. Did he ever tell you that?” my father asked.

I looked down at my feet, ashamed at my behavior. “No. That must have been hard,” I said sheepishly.

“Your grandfather taught me that if you let people see your talent, they will accept you for who you are. I want you to always remember what my father taught me, even if it takes a few years for people to see who you are,” said Papa.

All I could say was, “Okay.” Then I asked, “What should I do now?”

Laughing, Papa said, “How about you pitch a few to me? You need some work.”

  31. Why was the author unhappy that day?

  A. Because he moved to a new country.

  B. Because his baseball team lost the game.

  C. Because he wasn’t offered a chance to pitch.

  D. Because he quarreled with his friends at school.

  B. patiently

  Snacking Secrets

Some athletes eat strange foods that improve their performance. Yohan Blake, the Jamaica sprinter and 100-meter world champion, has stolen champion sprinter Usain Bolt’s thunder on the track during the Olympic trials, Asked about how he gets his energy. Change is everything in the case of mobile phones. Recent research indicates that the mobile phone is changing not only our culture, but our very bodies as well.

First, let’s talk about culture. The difference between the mobile phone and its parent, the fixed-line phone, is that a mobile number corresponds to a person, while a landline goes to a place. If you call my mobile, you get me. If you call my fixed-line phone, you get whoever answers it.

This has several implications(含义). The most common one, however, and perhaps the thing that has changed our culture forever, is the “meeting” influence. People no longer need to make firm plans about when and where to meet. Twenty years ago, a Friday night would need to be arranged in advance. You needed enough time to allow everyone to get from their place of work to the first meeting place. Now, however, a night out can be arranged on the run. It is no longer “see you there at 8”,but “text me around 8 and we’ll see where we all are.”

Texting changes people as well. In their paper, “Insights into the Social and Psychological Effects of SMS (Short Message Service) Text Messaging", two British researchers distinguished between two types of mobile phone users: the “talkers” and the “texters”-those who prefer voice to text messages and those who prefer text to voice.

They found that the mobile phone’s individuality and privacy gave texters the ability to express a whole new outer personality. Texters were likely to report that their family would be surprised if they were to read their texts. This suggests that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one familiar to those who knew them well.

Another scientist wrote of the changes that mobiles have brought to body language. There are two kinds that people use while speaking on the phone. There is the “speakeasy”: the head is held high, in a self-confident way, chatting away. And there is the “spacemaker”: these people focus on themselves and keep out other people.

Who can blame them? Phone meetings get cancelled or reformed and camera- phones intrude(侵入)on people’s privacy. So, it is understandable if your mobile makes you nervous. But perhaps you needn’t worry so much. After all, it is good to talk.

  41. The “meeting” influence of a mobile phone refers to the fact that ________.

  A. people can arrange their meeting place and time more flexibly

  B. people have to make a firm plan about when and where to meet

  C. people are able to meet someone at any place and any time

  D. people have to attend phone meetings than ever before

  B. well written

  44. According to the passage, who is afraid of being heard while talking on the mobile?

  A. talkers B. the “speakeasy” C. the “spacemaker”

  D. texters

  45. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?

  阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项标号涂黑。

Top Four Ways to Build a Wonderful Life

  1. Live Below Your Means

There will always be temptation to give up the future for immediate pleasure. We all want to buy that new piece of technology, treat ourselves to an expensive night on the town, or take out a loan for the flashy car we can’t afford. It might feel great at the time but unwise spending hurts a lot later on. Enjoy life’s simple pleasures and save as much as you can. Expensive things don’t create lasting happiness and security. Careful spending will bring you greater leisure and enjoyment in the long run.

  2. Put Your Money to Work

Saving is great, but to make the most of your money you need to put it to work. Good investments can be the difference between retiring in your 40’s or in your 60’s. A post today at The Simple Dollar really got me thinking. According to Trent’s estimates, if a person in their early 20’s invests 20% of their income in an S&P index fund, the interest they earn will equal their current salary when they reach their early 40’s. They could retire without a drop in income! Wise investing is the surest path to financial independence and it’s something everyone can work on. It’s definitely an area I’ll be devoting more attention to in my personal life.

  3. Educate Yourself

To be happy we need continuous growth. The best way to grow is life-long education. This doesn’t mean you need to pursue a doctorate or spend 2 hours reading every day. Self-education can be anything that takes you out of your comfort zone. The important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas and perspectives. Education builds over time. It might feel like the bits of wisdom you acquire don’t mean much, but over the years they add up to form a wiser, kinder, more interesting person.

  4. Develop Lasting Personal Relationships

Suppose you had everything you wanted. Would you be happy without anyone to share it with? The personal relationships we develop with friends and family members are the greatest source of happiness in our lives. Don’t forget about them. Taking the time to cultivate and enjoy personal relationships is essential to long-term happiness. Without the people you care about you’ll probably be miserable, no matter how successful you become.

  46. According to the passage, in order to achieve financial independence after retirement, we’d better ________.

  A. get along well with our family and friends

  B. bring ourselves leisure as well as enjoyment

  C. invest our money wisely when we are young

  D. learn some new skills and try to find a new job

  47. From the passage we can infer that some people try to ________.

  A. gain happiness by buying themselves expensive things

  B. save everything they can to help those in need

  C. devote more attention to their personal life

  D. take out a loan to promote technology

  48. The author of the passage may agree that the key to self-education is ________.

  A. gaining as many degrees as possible

  B. being open to new ideas and views

  C. only focusing on very big events

  D. creating long-term happiness

  49. The above passage is written in order to ________.

  A. explain what true happiness is about

  B. offer ways to achieve a happy and successful life

  C. introduce different definitions about happiness

  D. persuade readers to find out the meaning of life

  46. C 根据文章第二段Trent的估计内容,以及后面两个句子的内容可以知道。

  47. A 根据文章的第一段倒数第二句话(昂贵的物品并不能带来持久的幸福和安全)可知。

  48. B 根据文章第三段The important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas and perspectives可知。

  49. B 本题考查对文章写作意图的把握,文章的四个段落都是用来向读者介绍一些创造美好生活的技巧和方法的,所以应该选B。
