　　In the present cultural atmosphere， much can be done by both sexes. Women can hold men's jobs， and men can hold women's； both men and women can play the same sports； both are supposed to share household responsibilities. Also， with the rise of so many single parent families， mothers or fathers often have to become twoparentsinone for their teenagers.

　　Yet， despite these changes， I believe firmly that there is a special importance in samesex relationships between mothers and daughters， and fathers and sons. Without these relationships， or some substitute(替代物)that completes a similar function， it's hard for children and parents to experience the full range of close talking relationships.

　　My reasons？ In order to function effectively in the adult world，we need good role models to show us how to behave and react. To be sure， you can learn a great deal from the opposite sex， and in the same cases， you may learn all you need to know. But in most cases， there is no real substitute for a good samesex role model to give a child the best chance at complete and wellbalanced emotional development.

　　Perhaps the most important lessons we learn from our samesex parents are how to relate both to people of the same sex and also to those of the opposite sex. Thus， sons need a strong male role model to learn how men deal with each other and with women. Similarly， daughters need a strong female model to understand how women relate to each other and to men.

　　Now that many species of parrot are in immediate danger of dying out，biologists are working together to study the natural history and the behaviour of this family of birds.Last year was an important turning point：conservationists founded the World Parrot Trust，based at Hayle in Cornwall，to support research into both wild and caged birds.

　　Research on parrots is vital for two reasons.First，as the Arizona programme showed，when reintroducing parrots to the wild，we need to be aware of what the birds must know if they are to survive in their natural home.We also need to learn more about the needs of parrots kept as pets，particularly as the Trust's campaign does not attempt to discourage the practice，but rather urges people who buy parrots as pets to choose birds raised by humans.
