I never knew how amazing it would feel to help a family 4,560 miles away from my home.I never knew how great an effect I could have on that single family.

From the moment I walked into French class,I knew almost instantly that I belonged there. My teacher,Madame Weiser,is a kind and caring woman, and is the person who started the interest within me to help a family abroad,no matter how many miles apart.

Back in 2011,my teacher travelled as a tourist to Mali,a country settled in West Africa with a large Frenchspeaking population. She didn’t expect to adopt an entire family, but fate had other plans.Madame met a nice man named Monsieur Diarra,a driver who had showed her the way through the dry lands of Mali.

Mali is now a wartorn country and unsafe for tourists to visit, leaving little work for taxi drivers.Madame Weiser realized how Monsieur Diarra’s family struggled on a daily basis, for he had a wife and four children to support as well as their grandmother,so she made a final decision to send the family as much money as she could raise every month.

Now,three years later,Madame Weiser has still kept up her fund, collecting money from family and friends as well as students to support the_cause.It has become more than just my teacher donating to her adopted family abroad.

As president of French Club at my high school and a French Honor Society member,I decided that our club should work to raise money for the family in need.By washing cars,we raised over $1,000.

From my experience,I’ve learned that making an effort is worth more than anything. Its effect is priceless!

English songs have been very popular for people around the world for many decades.Singers, from Elvis Presley to Ricky Martin, from the Beatles to Eminen and from Natalie Cole to Britney Spears, have all been sitting in everyone’s heart, even for people who don’t speak English. But will you have better English skills if you listen to English songs for a long time?

From my experiences, some people listen to English songs for 20-30 years but still haven’t accomplished any good English skills. Some people choose English songs to be the “main learning approach”,but most of them have failed.

Listening to English songs does not help you to speak English fluently. It does help you gain some vocabularies. Most of them are unusual ones that you don’t use in your everyday life. You won’t learn the sentence “It is a complicate project. We really need to meet the deadline.” in any English songs.

People like using English songs to practice English skills because it’s easy and enjoyable. They think that sitting in the car listening to English songs day by day can improve their English skills. It is not that actually.

You will not improve your listening skills because normal people don’t speak with melody (乐调).People don’t talk like Eminen’s songs (well, actually, some teenagers do).You can’t get yourself familiar with English pronunciation or accent just from listening to English songs. The words that they pronounce in the songs are not the words that you will hear in your everyday life.It often even confuses you more how English is pronounced.

I would fully encourage you to watch English movies, listen to radio news or other normal talks, but not music.Of course, you can consume it for fun but not the aim to improve your English skills.

  5.What’s the text mainly about?

A.How English songs help people practice English skills.

B.Who has made English songs popular all over the world.

C.Why people won’t improve their English by listening to English songs.

D.Where people can find good English songs to practise their English skills.

6.English songs are helpful for English learners if they want to ________.

  A.speak English fluently

  B.enlarge their vocabularies

  C.improve their listening skills

D.learn to express themselves in daily life

7.Which of the following won’t probably appear in English songs?

  A.Country road,take me home.

  B.Every night I see you,I feel you.

C.It’s not a big big thing if you leave me.

D.We need to meet the deadline though it’s tough.

8.We can learn from the text that ________.

A.worldfamous singers have done a lot to help people learn English

B.watching English movies or listening to radio news can be a great help

C.English songs get people familiar with English pronunciation or accent

D.most people who enjoy English songs in their car speak English very well

The term “smog” was first used in London during the early 1900’s to describe the combination of smoke and fog. What we typically call “smog” today is a mixture of pollutants but is primarily made up of groundlevel ozone (臭氧).

Ozone can be beneficial or harmful depending on where it stays. The ozone staying high above the Earth protects human health and the environment, but groundlevel ozone is responsible for the choking, coughing, and painful eyes associated with smog. The ozone in smog also prevents plants growth and can cause widespread damage to crops and forest.

Major smog occurrences often are linked to heavy motor vehicle traffic, high temperatures, sunshine, and calm winds.Weather and geography affect the position and severity of smog.Because temperature regulates the length of time it takes for smog to form, smog can form faster and be more severe on a hot and sunny day. When warm air stays near the ground instead of rising and winds are calm, smog may stay trapped over your city for days.As traffic and other sources add more pollutants to the air,the smog gets worse.Smog is often more severe away from the pollution sources because the chemical reactions that cause smog occur in the atmosphere while the reacting chemicals are being moved by the wind.

Smog is a visible example of air pollution. You can look into the distance during the day to see how much smog there is in the air.In addition, most cities measure the concentrations of pollutants in the air and report the results to the public.

Environmental Protection Agency sets national standards for pollutants.Areas that fail to meet the standards for at least one air pollutant are called “nonattainment (不达标) areas”.New measures are being taken by

local governments across the country to reduce air pollution in nonattainment areas. These include: banning charcoal barbecues and wood burning in stoves or fireplaces when pollution levels are high;developing programs to encourage carpooling and voluntary “ozone actions”; limiting traffic in overcrowded areas;expanding or improving public transportation systems;requiring employers to contribute to employee public transportation costs;assessing “smog fees” on cars according to the number of miles driven and vehicle emissions (排放) produced;and even buying and breaking up older“superdirty” cars.

D.Chemical reactions occur in the moving air and cause smog.

根据第三段最后一句中的“because the chemical reactions...by the wind”可知,化学反应在流动的空气里发生并且导致了烟雾。故选D。

11.Which indication shows more exact the air is poor?

A.Heavy motor vehicle traffic in big cities.

B.Widespread damage of crops and forest.

C.Clear outlines of hills in the distance.

A campaign is being launched to encourage children to give up 30 minutes of screen time a day to head for the great outdoors to experience the wonders of the wilderness.

The newly formed Wild Network—a cooperation of nearly 400 organizations—is attempting to attract youngsters away from television and computer screen and into fields, woods and parks.Organizers say it is the UK’s biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor play, and claim it could help improve fitness, mental alertness and general happiness.

A documentary film,Project Wild Thing, will be a sign of the launch at more than 50 cinemas across the UK from Friday. It looks at the increasingly weak link between children and nature.

Members of the network include the National Trust,RSPB,Play England and the NHS sustainable development unit.Andy Simpson, chairman of the Wild Network, said,“The tragic truth is that kids have lost touch with nature and the outdoors in just one generation.Time spent outdoors is down, roaming ranges have fallen drastically, activity levels are declining and the ability to identify common species has been lost.”

Suggestions of how to get more time in nature include collecting conkers, camping or snail racing, and observing autumn color on trees.

From January, the network will aim to make suggestions to politicians on how the government can do more to get children muddy and brighteyed.

This is not the first time the message of less screen but more play has been brought up.Children in the 1980s were entreated to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don’t You,which somewhat confusingly called on its viewers to “switch off your TV set,and go to do something less boring instead.”

12.What is the purpose of the campaign?

13.How can children get more time in nature according to the passage?

  A.By surfing the Internet.

  B.By collecting stamps.

  C.By going to the cinema.

14.“Less screen but more play” was first put forward by________.

  A.Wild Network

  B.the BBC TV

  C.the National Trust

  D.Play England

根据最后一段中的“This is...Why Don’t You...”

B.Children have already been close to nature.

  C.Politicians have controlled the campaign.

D.TV viewers will turn away from television.

  解析:选A。 故选A。
