When I told my father that I was moving to Des Moines, Iowa, he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s, when he was an editor in the literary magazine of Southern Methodist University(SMU)in Dallas, Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU, and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious back disease. She couldn;t afford the operation because her family was poor.

Her mother ran a boardinghouse in Galveston, a seaside town near Houston, Texas. She was cleaning out the attic(阁楼)one day when she came across an old dusty manuscript(手稿). On its top page were the words, “By O. Henry”. It was a nice story, and she sent it to her daughter at SMU, who showed it to my father. My father had never read the story before, but it sounded like O. Henry, and he knew that O. Henry had once lived in Houston. So it was possible that the famous author had gone to the beach and stayed in the Gainestown boardinghouse, and had written the story there and left the manuscript behind by accident. My father visited an O. Henry expert at Columbia University in New York, who authenticated the story as O. Henry’s.

My father then set out to sell it. Eventfully, he foud himself in Des Moines, meeting with Gardner Cowles, a top editor at the Des Moines Register. Cowles loves the story and bought it on the spot. My father took the money to the girl. It was just enough for her to have the operation she so desperately needed.

My father never told me what the O. Henry story was about. But i doubt that it could have been better than his own story.

  49. Who found the O. Henry’s manuscript?

  A. The girl’s mother.

  B. The author’s father.

  C. The girl.

  D. The author.

  50. Which of the following might explain the fact that the manuscript was found in the attic?

  A. O. Henry once worked in Houston.

  B. O. Henry once stayed in Galveston.

  C. O. Henry once moved to Des Moines.

  D. O. Henry once taught at SMU.

  51. The underlined word “authenticated” in Paragraph 2 probably means __________.

  A. named

  B. treated

  C. proved

  D. described

  52. According to the text, why did the author’s father go to Des Moines?

  A. To sell the O. Henry story.

  B. To meet the author himself.

  C. To talk with the O. Henry expert.

  D. To give money to the girl.

Global Positioning Systems (全球定位系统) are now a part of everyday driving in many countries. These satellitebased systems provide turnbyturn directions to help people get to where they want to go.However, they can also cause a lot of problems, send you to the wrong place or leave you completely lost. Many times, the driver is to blame.Sometimes a GPS error is responsible. Most often, says Barry Brown,it is a combination of the two.

Barry Brown is with the Mobile Life Centre in Stockholm,Sweden. He told us about an incident involving a friend who had flown to an airport in the eastern United States. There he borrowed a GPSequipped car to use during his stay.Mr Brown says,“They just plugged in an address and then set off to their destination. And,then it wasn’t until they were driving for thirty minutes that they realized they actually put in a destination back on the West Coast where they lived. They actually put their home address in.So again, the GPS is kind of ‘garbage in garbage out’.”

Mr Brown says this is a common human error, but what makes the problem worse has to do with some of the shortcomings,or failures,of GPS equipment. He says,“One problem with a lot of the GPS units is they have a very small screen and they just tell you the next turn.Because they just give you the next turn, sometimes that means that it is not really giving you the overview that you would need to know that it’s going to the wrong place.”

Mr Brown says,“One of the things that struck us,perhaps the most important thing was that you have to know what you’re doing when you use a GPS.There are these new skills that people have developed. There are these new competencies (资格) that you need to have to be able to use a GPS because they sometimes go wrong. This goes against a common belief that GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills.”

Barry Brown says to make GPS systems better we need a better understanding of how drivers, passengers and GPS systems work together.

1.According to Barry Brow,in most cases,________are blame for the problems.

  A.human errors

  B.GPS errors

C.errors caused by both drivers and GPS

D.errors caused by putting in a wrong address

2.The example of Barry Brown’s friend is used to show that________.

  A.GPS is nothing but garbage

B.GPS is still not accurate enough

C.it is difficult for drivers to use GPS equipment

D.sometimes drivers are responsible for the problem

3.It can be inferred from the second paragraph that________.

A.it’s impossible to drive from the east to the west in the US

B.Barry Brown’s friend went to Stockholm,Sweden by plane

C.given wrong instructions, the GPS will produce wrong results

D.GPS systems are for passive drivers who lack navigational skills

4.Which of the followings is one of the shortcomings of GPS equipment?

A.It just tells the driver to turn once at a time.

B.It gives the driver the overview.

C.Its screen is too small to be seen clearly.

D.It is only suitable for passive drivers.

5.What’s the main idea of the text?

A.GPS systems are helpful for drivers.

B.Driving with GPS can be difficult to navigate (导航).

C.Drivers should understand how GPS systems work.

D.Drivers should learn to use GPS systems correctly.

An older friend once gave me a piece of advice,“Enjoy the last few weeks of college,” she said,“since college is the best time of your life.”

This was not the first time I’d heard such a statement, but with graduation fast coming close, her words especially struck me.It seemed a bit disappointing to reach one’s life peak at only 22 years of age,but in her opinion, college had been one of the best times in my life so far.I made friends, took classes, and learned a great deal about myself. But I was also excited for the time after college—moving to a new city, starting a new job,and becoming a “real” person.I hoped that my great dreams were practical.

Then, last week I read a column in Real Simple Magazine called 100 Years of Attitude,in which women 100 years or older shared their life experiences and views.I noticed that none of them considered college as the “best” time of their life. Not all of them went to college, but still in most cases their teens and twenties were not the best times of their life. They said some of their favorite times were raising their children, traveling after retirement, and even enjoying their present time and age.

Enjoying one’s present time and age was a clear theme of the interviews.A piece of advice given by the women was about the importance of making the best of all situations.I think it more accurate than that of my friend;I can say with certainty that if I am lucky enough to make it to 100.I refuse to spend the last 80 years of my life plummeting (跌落) downhill,or even leveling off.

I am sure that our eagerness and devotion will make us college students live a meaningful life.We will not just look backwards or miss our college days.We will look forward in excitement about continued journey uphill.

1.Which of the following opinions does the writer agree with?

A.College is the best time of one’s life.

B.Twenties were the best time of the old people.

C.One should make the best of all situations.

D.One should not look backwards at their college time.

2.In the second paragraph, the writer wants to say________.

A.her achievements in college would be the peak of her success

B.she is looking forward to living as a “real” person in college

C.she becomes more and more uneasy with graduation

D.she is satisfied with the college life but is hopeful for the future

3.The column the writer read is mainly about those old women’s________.

A.best time of life at youth

  B.life experiences and views

  C.different opinions about life

  D.favorite time with best friends

4.By saying “I refuse to spend the last 80 years of my life plummeting downhill,or even leveling off” (in Paragraph 4),the writer really means________.

A.she will not spend the rest of her time at college

B.she will not just obtain a college level certificate

C.she will not be satisfied with what she has already accomplished

D.she will not be content with the life in the future

5.Which of the following words can be used to describe the writer?

  A.Ambitious. B.Practical.

  C.Imaginative.

  D.Proud.

  2024届·合肥市第三次质检)

Relationships make or break us. From the quality of our family time to our interactions at work, our relationships are largely responsible for our career success or failure. Here are some guidelines.

People who focus on themselves when interacting with others rarely build positive lasting relationships. Instead, they should become good listeners and encourage others to talk about themselves.

All the skills and education in the world will never impress anyone as much as sincere, heartfelt care for them. Plus, few things have a more positive effect on others than finding out and remembering things about them. Knowing a lot about people is a real display of your care for them, and it creates a lasting bond.

Give your relationship something positive when you meet, such as ideas, opportunities, and resources. Besides giving, be willing to receive from the other person. In fact, one of the best ways to start a relationship is to ask for advice or a favor. Everyone loves to show his expert knowledge and authority on a subject, because it makes him

  feel honored and respected.

Try to use conflict as a tool, not a weapon. The presence of conflict in a relationship is natural and healthy. Damage only occurs when we react inappropriately to it. To learn more about the other person and find a solution that serves both of you, relationships could become stronger and deeper.

Relationships break up quickly when others can't count on you, so say what you mean and stick to your word. Few things damage a friendship more severely than breaking a trust.

If people know more about the value of good relationships, they can achieve both personal satisfaction and professional success. If you aren't naturally gifted in this area, don't worry. You can learn to improve them in your life and career.
