Boys need friends, suffer when they don’t believe they have any,and worry over the ups and downs of relationships. Many adults believe that somehow boys need friends less than girls do,in truth, though,no boy is an island;boys value their friends throughout childhood and adolescence and are happier and healthier when they have solid relationships with peers.

Despite the common belief that girls are better at relationships, most boys consider their friends a very important part of their lives, and boys may actually be better at keeping friendships than girls are. A recent study of 10to15yearold boys and girls found that girls’ friendships are actually more fragile. Girls tend to say and do hurtful things to each other more frequently than boys, and girls are more hurt by the end of a friendship.

Boys are the living definition of the phrase “peer group”;they love games with rules, competition, and doing things together. Boys seem to enjoy, even need the opportunity to test themselves against others, and many lasting friendships begin in karate (空手道) class or on the basketball court. Competence and skill are widely respected;being picked last for a team or left out altogether is an experience that can haunt (萦绕心头) a boy for years.

As boys mature, the friendship becomes even more important, and it frequently widens to include girls. During the teen years, friends can become the most important part of a boy’s life—and a part in which his parents are not included. The confusion of being a teenager leads boys to form close bonds with friends. There is the sense for many boys that a friend is someone who is “always there for me”,someone he can trust. They may be partners in crime or partners in study, but the friendship of adolescent boys can run surprisingly deep.

A recent international survey found that around 75% of the world’s best universities, such as MIT, Harvard and Princeton are in the US.

But while US universities are very good at producing research and raising money, they aren’t so good at supplying the needs of the US high-skill labour market so America relies on educated talent from elsewhere. Take the example of medical education. The US simply does not train enough doctors to meet its needs. Each year many more doctors retire than graduate from its medical schools and the US robs the world to make up the difference.

25% of doctors working in the US received their training elsewhere. That is close to 200,000 doctors educated abroad. Around 5,000 were trained in Africa, mainly Ghana, Nigeria and South Africa, but also elsewhere. In 2002, there were 47 Liberian-trained doctors working in the US, and just 72 working in Liberia. The poorest always lose out.

In most countries, especially in the developing world, doctors are trained at public expense. If a doctor from Ghana is taken to the US, not only does that country lose its doctor, it loses the money paid for the training. That means the world’s poorest people are paying for the health care of the world’s richest people.

Why can’t the US supply its own needs? After all, doctors in the US are not exactly badly paid. But training is long, difficult, and, of course, expensive. A newly trained doctor graduates with about $200,000 of debt. Unlike lawyers and bankers, of which there are no American shortages, doctors lack the opportunities to earn huge salaries immediately and pay it all back.

Also, there is no central government planning for university education in America making it more difficult to create new medical colleges.

So while we look with envy at the wealth and achievements of the top American universities, we should bear in mind that not all is as well as it seems. In fact, it may be that the weakness of the US higher education system is contributing to the health and development crisis in some of the world’s poorest regions.

  31. What is the passage mainly about?

  A. The high standards of universities in the United States.

  B. The quality of doctors produced by American universities.

  C. Medical training provided at American Universities.

  D. The quantity of doctors produced by American universities.

  32. How many doctors working in America come from Africa?

  A. 5,000

  B. 50,000

  C. 200, 000

  D. 750

  33. Why does the author think getting doctors from Africa is not good?

  A. Their education level is not as good as American trained doctors.

  B. The cost of bringing them to America is more than training local doctors.

  C. It takes valuable skills away from some of the world’s poorest countries.

  D. The African doctors are poorly paid compared to the American doctors.

  34. Which is NOT a reason given for the lack of locally trained doctors in America?

  A. Doctors salaries are not very high in America.

  B. People can earn big money more quickly in other professions.

  C. It is difficult to create new medical schools in America.

  D. Training is long and very expensive.

  35. The underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refers to ________.

Living a healthy lifestyle lies in forming the right eating habits. Here are some of the good habits you can develop when it comes to healthy eating.

Drink plenty of water. You must drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. You may need even more water if you are in a hot environment or if you are exercising.

Eat breakfast. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. A recent study has shown that those who eat breakfast will consume an average of 100 calories less during the day than their colleagues who skipped breakfast. They will also be able to concentrate better.

Don’t skip lunch. If you do so, your blood sugar level will drop and your metabolism (新陈代谢) will slow down. When you get home you are starving and eat everything you can find.

We all need to snack from time to time, but please choose your snacks carefully. In fact, it’s a good idea to eat two healthy snacks besides your three main meals. Choose healthy snacks like fruits and vegetables, low fat yogurt, cottage cheese with apple sauce, and so on.

Eat your fruit and vegetables. We should eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. Take a piece of fruit for a snack, add some banana and raisins to your favourite breakfast cereal, have a salad with lunch, and eat at least one vegetable at dinner each night.

Do not eat your dinner too late. Try to eat dinner at least 3 hours before you go to bed. This will give your body a chance to digest most of the food before you rest for the next 8 hours. Plan dinner for the week ahead of time and make sure you have everything you need in the house so other family members can get a head start on dinner if you have a late meeting at the office.

  36. How many good eating habits are mentioned in the passage?

  A. 5.

  C. It is suggested that you eat your dinner at seven if you plan to go to bed at ten.

  D. It is good for your health to eat fruits and vegetables at each meal every day.

People in the past made clay-pottery because they needed it for their lives. They used the pots they made for cooking, storing food, and carrying things from place to place. Pottery was so important to the early culture that scientists now study it to learn more about ancient civilizations. The more advanced the pottery in terms of pictures, materials and making, the more advanced the culture itself.

The artisan who makes pottery in North America today use his or her skill and imagination to create items that are beautiful as well as useful, turning something ordinary into something special. The potter uses one of the Earth's most basic materials, clay. Clay can be found almost anywhere. Good pottery clay must be free from all small stones and other hard materials that would make the potting steps

difficult. Most North American artisan potters now buy ready-made clay in stores, but some find the clay they need right in the earth, close to where they work.

The most important tools potters use are their own hands; however, they also use wooden modeling tools, plain wire, and sponges. Plain wire is used to cut away the finished pot from its vase on the potter's wheel.

After a finished pot is dried of all its wet part in the open air, it is placed in a kiln and fired. The first firing hardens the pottery, arid it is then ready to be glazed and fired again.

For areas where they do not want any glaze, such as the bottom of the pot, artisans paint on melted wax that will later bum off in the kiln. They then pour on the liquid glaze and let it run over the clay surface, making any kind of designs that they want.

  41. What does the passage mainly discuss?

  A. Different kinds of clay

  B. The training of an artisan

  C. The making of pottery
