The baby is just one day old and has not yet left hospital. She is quiet but alert(警觉). Twenty centimeters from her face researchers have placed a white card with two black spots on it. She stares at it carefully. A researcher removes the card and replaces it by another, this time with the spots differently spaced. As the cards change from one to the other, her gaze(凝视)starts to lose its focus--until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card. Can she tell that the number two is different from three, just 24 hours after coming into the world?

Or do newborns simply prefer more to fewer? The same experiment, but with three spots shown before two, shows the same return of interest when the number of spots changes. Perhaps it is just the newness? When slightly older babies were shown cards with pictures of objects (a comb, a key, an orange and so on), changing the number of objects had an effect separate from changing the objects themselves. Could it be the pattern that two things make, as opposed to three? No again. Babies paid more attention to squares moving randomly on a screen when their number changed from two to three, or three to two. The effect even crosses between senses. Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise(同样地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

1.Babies are sensitive to the change in _______.

  A. the size of cards

  B. the colour of pictures

  C. the shape of patterns

  D. the number of objects

2.Why did the researchers test the babies with drumbeats?

  A. To reduce the difficulty of the experiment

  B. To see how babies recognize sounds

  C. To carry their experiment further

  D. To keep the babes interest.

3.Where does this text probably come from?

  A. Science fiction

  B. Children’s literature

  C. An advertisement

  D. A science report

As the cards change from one to the other, her gave(凝视)starts to lose its focus-until a third, with three black spots, is presented. Her gaze returns: she looks at it for twice as long as she did at the previous card.

Babies who were repeatedly shown two spots became more excited when they then heard three drumbeats than when they heard just two; likewise(同样地)when the researchers started with drumbeats and moved to spots.

The way we do things round here

Some years ago,I was hired by an American bank. I received a letter from the head of the Personnel Department that started,“Dear John,I am quite pleased that you have decided to join us.” That “quite” saddened me. I thought he was saying “we're kind of pleased you decided to join us although I wish we had hired someone else.”Then I discovered that in American English “quite” sometimes means “very”, while in British English it means “fairly”.

So the first lesson about working in other countries is to learn the language and by that I don't just mean the words people speak. It is body language, dress, manners, ideas and so on. The way people do things highlights many of the differences we see between cultures (文化).

Some of these differences may be only on the surface—dress, food and hours of work—while others may be deeper and take longer to deal with. Mostly, it is just a question of getting used to the differences and accepting them, like the climate (气候),while getting on with business.

Some of the differences may be an improvement. People are more polite;the service is better;you ask for something to be done and it happens without having to ask again. However, other differences can be troubling, like punctuality (准时). If you invite people to a party at 7 o'clock your guests will consider it polite to turn up exactly on time in Germany, five minutes early in the American Midwest,an hour early in Japan, 15 minutes afterwards in the UK, up to an hour afterwards in Italy and some time in the evening in Greece. I prefer not to use the word “late” because there is nothing wrong with the times people arrive. It is simply the accepted thing to do in their own country.

. The author was unhappy as mentioned in Paragraph 1 because he thought ________.

  A. the American bank didn't think much of him

  B. the American bank might hire another person

  C. it's difficult to get used to American culture

  D. it's easy to misunderstand Americans

  答案:A。 由第一段中“That “quite” saddened me”.

2.The underlined word “highlights” in Paragraph 2 probably means ________.

  A. encourages

  B. helps to narrow

  C. increases

  D. draws attention to

.According to the author, what should we do with most cultural differences?

  A. Ask the native people for help.B. Understand and accept them.

  C. Do things in our own way. D. Do indepth research.

.When invited to a party the people who are usually punctual are________.

  A. Italians

  B. Germans

  C. Greeks

  D. the British

由最后一段“If you invite people...on time in Germany...”

I was walking around in a mall, when I saw a cashier hand this little boy some money back. The cashier said, "I'm sorry, but you don't have enough money to buy this doll".The little boy seemed very disappointed.

I walked toward him and asked him who he wished to give this doll to."It's the doll that my sister wanted so much for Christmas. She was sure that Santa Claus would bring it to her: But Santa Claus can't bring it to her where she is now.I have to give the doll to my mommy so that she can give it to my sister when she goes there."His eyes were so sad."My sister has gone to be with God.Daddy says that Mommy is going to see God very soon too, so I thought that she could take the doll with her to give it to my sister."

My heart nearly stopped. The little boy looked up at me and continued, "I told Daddy to tell Mommy not to go yet.I need her to wait until I come back from the mall."

Diana Jacobs thought her family had a workable plan to pay for college for her 21-year-old twin sons: a combination of savings, income, scholarships, and a modest amount of borrowing. Then her husband lost his job, and the plan fell apart.

“I have two kids in college, and I want to say ‘come home,’ but at the same time I want to provide them with a good education,” says Jacobs.

The Jacobs family did work out a solution: They asked and received more aid form the schools, and each son increased his borrowing to the maximum amount through the federal loan (贷款) program. They will each graduate with $20,000 of debt, but at least they will be able to finish school.

With unemployment rising, financial aid administrators expect to hear more families like the Jacobs. More students are applying for aid, and more families expect to need student loans. College administrators are concerned that they will not have enough aid money to go around.

At the same time, tuition(学费)continues to rise. A report from the National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education found that college tuition and fees increased 439% from 1982 to 2007, while average family income rose just 147%. Student borrowing has more than doubled in the last decade,

“If we go on this way for another 25years, we won’t have an affordable system of higher education,” says Patrick M. Callan, president of the center. “The middle class families have been financing it through debt. They will send kids to college whatever it takes, even if that means a huge amount of debt.”

Financial aid administrators have been having a hard time as many companies decide that student loans are not profitable enough and have stopped making them. The good news, however, is that federal loans account for about three quarters of student borrowing, and the government says that money will flow uninterrupted.

  1. According to Paragraph 1, why did the plan of Jacobs family fail?

  A. The twins wasted too much money.

  B. The father was out of work.

  C. Their saving ran out.

  D. The family fell apart.

  2. How did the Jacobs manage to solve their problem?

  A. They asked their kids to come home.

  B. They borrowed $20,000 from the school.

  C. They encouraged their twin sons to do part-time jobs.

  D. They got help from the school and the federal government.

  3. Financial aid administrators believe that _______.

  A. more families will face the same problem as the Jacobses

  B. the government will receive more letters of complaint

  C. college tuition fees will double soon

  D. America’s unemployment will fall

4.What can we learn about the middle class families from the text?

  A. They blamed the government for the tuition increase.

  B. Their income remained steady in the last decade.

  C. They will try their best to send kids to college.

  D. Their debts will be paid off within 25 years.

5.According to the last paragraph, the government will

  A. provide most students will scholarships

  B. dismiss some financial aid administrators

  C. stop the companies from making student loans

  D. go on providing financial support for college students
